This study aimed to explore the intensity of adolescent girls’ exposure to online harassment hashtags on social media, identify the psychological effects on them, and examine the relationship between the intensity of exposure and its psychological impacts. The study also looked into the motivations for their exposure to these hashtags, their level of attention during exposure, their perception of the realism of the content presented through these hashtags, and the influence of demographic variables on this relationship. A field survey was conducted using a questionnaire targeting a sample of 401 adolescent girls who are exposed to online harassment hashtags, distributed across urban and rural areas.

The key findings of the field study are as follows:

1-The study found that the intensity of adolescent girls’ exposure to online harassment hashtags on social media was moderate or high for the majority of the sample.

2-It was revealed that the motivations for exposure were generally moderate or high for most of the adolescent girls. A significant proportion of them had utilitarian or ritualistic reasons for engaging with these harassment hashtags. Specifically, 63.8% were moderately exposed and 21.7% were highly exposed.

3-The study showed that the level of attention among adolescent girls while being exposed to online harassment hashtags was moderate or low for the majority of the sample.
